Description

From Wikipedia:
The Crescent Nebula (also known as NGC 6888, Caldwell 27, Sharpless 105) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, about 5000 light-years away from Earth. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1792. It is formed by the fast stellar wind from the Wolf-Rayet star WR 136 (HD 192163) colliding with and energizing the slower moving wind ejected by the star when it became a red giant around 250,000 to 400,000 years ago. The result of the collision is a shell and two shock waves, one moving outward and one moving inward. The inward moving shock wave heats the stellar wind to X-ray-emitting temperatures.

I’ve been involved with AP for about five years and this is my first attempt at imaging the Crescent Nebula in Cygnus. My summer skies are usually very poor. I got a chance for some so-so skies and tried due to frustration. Luckily, I managed about 11.7 hours on the Crescent over three nights. The clouds would move in most nights after midnight and sometimes a patch would pass through for a half hour or so.
The original process was nice, but lots and lots of red. Almost none of the teal OIII showed in the front and rear of the nebula. I re-processed in HOO going back to basics by extracting the channels, equalizing the histograms and recombining with LRGBCombination with R=R, G=G, and G=B.
A bit snappier product with faint OIII showing in the front and rear areas of the Crescent.
I plan to work soon on another version to hopefully bring out more of the OIII, but for now, I am happy with this process.
Thanks for looking!
Jim
